For most people, social interaction is critical for our overall well-being. Remaining socially active has a wide range of positive health outcomes, proving that friendships and connections are good for our mental health, physical & emotional health.
With one in five older Australians feeling socially isolated, the impacts on a persons health can be dramatic.
Loneliness and social isolation have been linked to common chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke, diabetes, dementia and depression.
Older people can feel lonely for a variety of reasons. They may have lost a husband or a wife, they may have moved away from family, or they may have suffered a decline in health. All of these reasons can affect how connected someone feels to their wider community.
Cootamundra Meals on Wheels provides Social Support in a group setting which enable our clients to participate in the community and maintain a level of independence, by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, connecting with people, building relationships, developing and maintaining emotional wellbeing, which is crucial in eliminating social isolation.
"We love getting together with the clients each month. We sometimes take them on bus outings to enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat, or even just have a BBQ in the park. But the smiles on the faces of the clients after they've spent the day in the company of others is just amazing to see."
"The fact that we see clients coming back month after month, just goes to show that we are creating a network where they feel comfortable and relaxed," said Mrs Kostrubic.
If you would like to find out more about the social support group, and the events we have planned for the remainder of 2026, please call the office on (02) 6942 4695.

The Cootamundra Ex-Servicemen's club played host to our May gathering, where the women took part in the monthly meeting of the Cootamundra Crafting group undertaking some sewing, knitting and puzzles. The men heard about the Cootamundra Men's shed, the historical society and also swapped some yarns over lunch in the bistro.

The first bus trip of the year was made even better with perfect Autumn weather as our clients headed to Gundagai and had a blast enjoying everything this town had to offer, including a fabulous lunch and a tasty gelato.

The fact that many of our group had never played croquet before didn't stop them from having an enjoyable morning learning about the fine art of this traditional game.

Our clients put a spring in their step with a visit to the local nursery. A walk through the established gardens, a bite to eat and plenty of gardening ideas to take home.

Chocolate lovers unite!! Clients made their own chocolate freckle, enjoyed a delicious lunch and stocked up on an assortment of goodies on their most recent outing.

Clients visited Wombat Cottage and celebrated Xmas in July.

In May, our clients ventured over to Junee for lunch at The Red Cow Hotel. A great day was had by all and another delicious Chinese lunch. A big thankyou to our volunteers who joined us on the day as well

Bathed in Autumn sunshine, in April, the group was treated to a beautiful bbq cooked by some of our extraordinary committee members. They fed the ducks and enjoyed a walk around the stunning gardens. (Next time we might even throw in a fishing rod!!)

The generation gap narrowed a little in March when more than 20 students in Year 8 at Cootamundra High spent the morning with members of the social support group, to play games, colour-in and generally chat to each other.

Who doesn't love a game of bingo and some trivia? That's exactly what clients got to do during the February outing to CC's Cafe in Cootamundra. Keeping the mind active is important as you get older. So is keeping the belly full with some AMAZING scones!!
